Atheist Tour Diary/Thessaloniki, Greece Aug 27th
Current mood: awake

We awake in Bergen and prepare for what we think is a 12 noon deaprture to greece, we are all a bit tired from the night before, but we are all in a great mood and looking forward to heading to greece. We quickly realsie as our cab has not arrived, that it's not coming , so we call the promoter and it turns out we could have slept in a bit cause our flight will not be leaving till around 3 p.m., but its better we get to the airport early to make sure there are no fuck ups along the way. We have about 3 hours to kill a the airport, baker finds a metal hammer with a great article about the florida death metal scene, and the full history of the death metal, and progressive death metal scene. We feel overjoyed to find our names in all of the articles, and thus securing the fact that we were not forgotten about in any way shape or form, in fact we were held in high regard by the writer, and for that we are grateful. I am super tired and my plan is to sleep on this 4 hour flight to greece, but i am not so lucky, i get fortunate enough to sit just in front of a slew of chatty norwegian nurses who are cackling like fucking hens!!! and to boot, there are a bunch of swedish fireman on the plane getting toasted and trying to pick them....AT MY FUCKING ROW!!!

We were supposed to be the loud ones right? hahaha well not on this day, we finally land in Athens to meet harry the promoter, there is a party planned tonight in athens in our honor, and so after showering up, and getting some food, we will be headed over to the party at a death metal club in town. Harry is a great guy, he is responsible for bringing all of the heavy bands to greece, and obscure bands like atheist, crimson glory etc. His assistant is Jon he will be doing all of the driving to thessaloniki which by the wya is a nice little 5 hour journey in a van, we will be leaving bright and fucking early of course to make the drive and we will be playing that night. Harry takes us for some authrntic greek cuisine, people the food was off the charts!!! We were feasting on all kinds of great stuff, it was SO much better than greek food we would get in the states, or so it seemed, i guess its important to know what to order, and prior to now, i had only known of a greek salad, and a Gyro. After the feast and some idle metal chatting, we head over to the party, its in a very hot little place, i cannot remember the name of the place, but it was chock full of all the local greek death metal guys and girls. they had the heaviest shit blasting super loud in the club, and they also had a video screen with the sound being piped through the p.a. speakers. We met some of the locals and signed some records, and some old rare vinyl as well, very cool to see an unquestionable Presence vinyl album. we never got one of those believe it  or not, so anyone who has one, hang on to that fucker , it's rare. Our performance from club detroit in florida after the elements tour comes on the video screen, i guess they were able to lift it from youtube.com or something. we have a few drinks, and head back to the hotel to get some sleep cause we have a long journey tomorrow. The next morning we roll our asses outta bed at around 6 am and start our long journey to thessaloniki, along the way we listend to a bunch of demos that i had brought of neurotica, Unheard and some of  my other stuff, harry is a demo collector and has over 800 in his collection so he wanted me to bring these for him. he also asked for the new gnostic demo which we brought for him so we jammed that one in the van as well. we arrive and we have a few hours to sleep before heading over for soundcheck, the hotel has AIR CONDITIONING!!  I can't fucking believe it! so we have a nap, and then awake and head over to do soundcheck. the club is located among a bunch of burnt out buildings, but they have started to build new things around them so it was a wierd little art deco greek vibe, nice restaurant, and club was cool as well. we have a great sound check,, the sound was very tight, its a small place holding only about 300, so it will be loud and proud here tonight. The local promoter's names was seffi and was super cool, he offered up a great dinner after soundcheck , and also was gonna hook us up some weed for later, YES!  after a killer dinner, i did an interview for a local greek web zine, and the guy doing the interview was actually the singer for a band that was opening the show called Rex Mundi. that went really well, and we headed back to the hotel to get ready for our greek debut. We head back to the club around 9:30 and we the place is hopping, black shits everywhere of course. the openers were already playing, we got a table outside the club and had a beer and talked with some of the kids outside the club, they seems very enthusiastic as we were told by the destruction guys they would be. we head in to check out some rex mundi' set. the band is having some problems with there gear and the sound is very muffled, we ask the sound guy is he will be fixing this issue before we hit the stage, and he assures us it will be sorted. so there is really no place to hang our before hitting the stage the place is packed full, and we hang out beside the stage which is also partially outside, many are out there hanging waiting for our set, i am talking with harry, i hand off my cigs and lighter to him to hold  for me cause there is no room on the stage for anything. steve has to set the drums up and the rest of the band is line checking, we do not have a crew with us so we do everything ourselves, which suits us just fine, but i think the kids kind of see that as strange that the band is out there before even playing, traditionally a crew will do the line checks for the band and then the band makes its grand entrance, fuck it we do it ourselves most of the time. so harry says we have 15 minutes before we go on, i am standing stage side and suddenly i hear sonny playing the intro to U.P. and i am 2 drags into a new cig and.....well i guess we are playing hahah, steve was not quite ready either, it was funny and fucked up, cause mentally you want to be ready for a bit of a countdown period 5 minutes before playing, but thatnks to our overzealous new guy, IT'S ON!  within  the first 2 songs, i have ran into the boom stand on the drums cause its literally right in my spine, and a dude jumps up on stage to dive off and hits sonnys pedal board and fucks up his guitar for the whole song of AIR. we persevere on through a bit of a messy set to be honest, we had a hard time hearing anything, and it was a very small stage, but i will say this , the kids were great!, they were singing and slammin and really they were the best part of the show on this night, we finally got cooking around the middle of the setm and  ton'y solo was a highlite tonight. we get done and head out to meet and greet, many many cool kids. one kid wrote me a note and said put this in your pocket and dont read it until later, so i did read it later it was a great note saying "PLEASE MAKE ANOHTER ALBUM AND REWRITE HISTORY AGAIN"!  Everyone seems to have had a great time and once again the audience is mad eup off mostly kids that were barely born when these records were released. thats amazing! Seffi the promoter wants to take us out tonight for dinner and drinks at anohter crazy little metal bar in thessaloniki, after the show we shower up and grub out again, and even though we have to get up a 6 am again and drive back to Athens for a show toorrow, we make the mistake of hitting the bar with seffi and his girlfriend Ula and her friend Sula, for 1 0r 2 drinks.....yeah! We arrive at this club and its loud as shit and very dark, seffi starts bring over beers and shots, and they start playing all of this great old metal, the crowd is comprised of dance folks and metal heads from the show tonight. we find a little corner and start doing a few shots which leads to more and before we know it we have had one beer and about 12 shots of some strange greek concoction brought to us by seffi. we did have an amazing time though, just enjoying the night and the DJ played FIRE from our elements album, that was wierd to hear in this place, very cool though, many thanks to seffi and the people who came to the show in thess, we had a memorable time and we will surely be paying the price for this in about 4 hours whn we have to get up and hop in the van again for a 5 hour journey back to athens. Thanks to seffi, all the kids we met, and to harry and john, and dimitri for getting us there. Stay tuned tommorow is Athens, Greece  night night all!

Hole in the Sky Day of show part 2
Current mood: working

Upon awakening this fine morning, i flip on the t.v and luckily found anamerican channel to check out, it was funny to see fucking will and grace with sub-titles beneath it. Showered up ans headed out to check out the rest of bergen, i had a really great time last night chillin with all the metal heads outside the garage, you all know who you are, thanks for the weed and the conversation. i walked around with my vid camera to tape some shit for my girl to see when i get home, i wondereddown by the water, and the fish market, it was strange, kind of like anamerican flea market but they were selling all kinds of shit like seal skins, and fox furs, that shit in america would never fly cause there would be PETA people tripping out on that. saw baker and carson strolling around the city as well, flynn i guess was still sleeping so i was in the mood for sushi so i took him and tony choy out for some sashimi at a place around the corner from the hotel, we sat down and waited for about 10 minutes with no service, so i get all pissed  off when that happens cause i always get shit service in a restaurant mainly cause waitresses thing they will get no tip from a tattoed guy i suppose, but i am a great tipper, my mom waited tables when i was growing up so i know thats there bread and butter. so we get up and look for another sushi joint, but there is nothing, so we head back with our tail between our legs and sit down again trying to get some food, this time we have success, i had some tuna and salmon, it was very very good. We are due to head to the venue around 5 ish today to get all of our shit together at the gig. the driver arrives to pick us up,we head over to the venue ,its at a different venue than the fest was last night, much much bigger, and we are told that its a sold out event sweet! upon arriving i realsie i had forgotten the atheist banner so i had to have the cat drive me back over to the hotel to grab it , the rest of the guys stayed behine to set up etc. i rode back in the van with the satyricon clan, not real friendly, or perhaps they assumed i was a roadie or something anyways  i ride back to the venue with schmier and the destruction tour mgr, tool is blasting on the stereo, schmier is like "who is that"? i told him its the new tool, we all agree that it rules and we arrive at the gig again. we head over to check on our merch and count it in and set the prices for the girls selling it for us. its a very organized event props to the promoters they did a great job. they lead me over to the catering that is set aside special for atheist, destruction and satyricon, a very nice spread indeed, we meet up with ana maerican writer for metal maniacs names mark, he had just arrived from jersey, and we chatted for a bit over some grub. we go on tonight around 9:45 i think, just before destruction. the backstage area is noce, we sit around there for a bit while the guitarists warm up, have some beer and some jager. they had assigned 2 people to help us with whatever we may need on this metal night, they were very helpful and we thank them for all they did. Grimfist was the firsr band i heard playing, very heavy, the sound system is supreme! i cant wait to get it on!! Did an interview with some really great guys from imhotep magazine, they were very knowledgable about our history and me and steve chatted with them for about an hour about all kinds of shit. We mulled around till showtime and finally it was time to go on, the crowd was thick and energetic, we hit the stage and launch into Unquestionable and the place goes off!, i love club settings, its so much more intimate, and personal. we see lots of the kids we met last night in the crowd, goats in the air having a great time, norwegians are a bit more subdued than expected, but i will not tolerate that shit, we head into on they slay and now the party is kicking in full force, it seems that they prefer the old shit here more than the elements stuff. the show goes off wothout a hitch, tony and steve's solos are really great on this night, we finish off the night with a rousing rendition of Piece of time and it's over. We were stoked to dry off and watch Destructions set of classics. we got to watch form this cat walk above the crowd, what a great view. i have never seen them before so i could not help but think of me and roger going to our job together back in the day in my little beat up car listening to release from agony, and all of the otehr cllassic record from destruction. roger and i really loved them a lot. there set was chock full of goodies Curse the gods, and many others, tony choy also loves them so we watched together like we were fucking 16 again, it was a great experience. afterwards we heading down to the crowd to meet some of the metallers, we suddenly found our selves surrounded by a bunch of them, we signed some shit and talked metal for about an hour, we ran into some guys who said they had a bunch of killer weed so we invited them back to the hotel later, hoping they would make it cause we have to fly to greece early in the morning. it tok us a bit to round up all of the guys to head back to the hotel. after arriving back at the hotel the place was jumping with activity, i forgot to tell you about this horrible little kareoke session that kept us up half the night last night, well it was in full effect again on this night. after showers we all just kind of hung out in front of the hotel, the night was about over we ran over to the 7-11 and ran into some guys from the show. bought some dews for the road, and some food and it seemd like a wrap, me and tony headed up to my room to get some sleeping pills to get us to sleep, we were just about ready to call it a night when knck knock on the door, it was the obliteration guys stopping by to hang out, we invited them in and shortly after that the dude with the weed shows up SWEET! even though we were planning on crashing, we sat and smoked about a quarter ounce of some kiler weed with these guys, dude just kept trying to give us some but we told him we have to fly to greece in the mrnig so we cannot take any with us but we would love to have one for our ride to the airport in the morning, so baker rolled one up for us, and then we proceeded to smoke about 4 fatties, the obliteration guys were so hight, i would be willing to bet higher than they had ever been before cause there was no tobacco in these joints like they were accustomed to. they got many laughs at tony choys attempts to learn how to say i am so fucking stoned in norwegian, each time he said it he fucked it up worse each time, they were laughing there asses off, i am suprised the hotel people did not tap on the door, cause my room was a non smoking room and on this night it was bellowing smoke hahaha.

4:30 am rolls around and we are high and tired so i clear evetyone out and thank them for hanging, thank the dude with the weed, signed his albums and off to bed, a successful trip to norway is in the books, there is no telling what greece will hold, we are told they will be crazy fans over there. lets hope so! Cheers all next stop Athens ,Greece!  Night night all!-kelly

Hole in the Sky/Bergen,Norway Aug 26th 2006 PT1
Current mood: high

Hello, Hello, and welcome to another glorious episode of the 2006 summer atheist tour diary, this leg of the trip of course takes us all the way north to Bergen, Norway to the Hole in the Sky festival. Many cool bands were playing at this years event including Celtic Frost, Necrophagist, Morbid Angel, Destruction(Yeah!) and many many others. My journey started with a pre flight, flight from my home in florida to Altanta to meet up with the rest of the guys, tony had to fly solo from Miami this trip, so anyways i arrive on tuesday at around 2, now our flight for Norway does not begin leaving till around 5:30 p.m. so right off the bat, i get to hang  at the airport JOY!  I See steve and we proceed to the check in to find our partners in crime Chris Baker and Sonny Carson, who by now have streamlined there traveling skills to an art form, you remember chris has the big fancy double road case for his guitars , and he had it all painted up...seemed like such a cool concept till they lost that shit in England hahaha, now he has a fucking backpack, and a soft guitar case and traveled with only one guitar which never left his grasp, ahh i am so proud of my new metal soldiers...with a glance to the past you see they have GROWN!

Our flight to norway is interupted by a connecting flight in amsterdam, but unfortunatley we have no time to zip off to the local cafe for some smoking, we just get to run from one gate to another as fast as we can, oh well, mental note to self, "We must book a few gigs in holland". We get seated and thats always a crap shoot, you always hope you will get lucky and get maybe a window, maybe an aisle, maybe even 3 seats empty so you can stretch out, cause people this is a LONG flight, but NOOOOO!!!, While i do score a window, i also scored an annoying seat partner, who enjoys yoga, walks in the park, small dogs.....kidding, actually this woman said not one word to me for 9 hours, thats an amazing thing to do you know? sit 6 inches from someone for 9 hours and say nothing to them, she did however find solace in crossing her fucking legs so her knee was invading my space....FUCK! So 8 hours 45 minutes, and no sleep later we arrive in amsterdam, i proceed to the nearest place to catch a cig break, steve stands by patiently as i kill myslef in slow motion right before his eyes,  we grab our next flight from amsterdam and as we board we run into our new friends and legends Destruction! Schmier is not hard to miss, towering above all the others on this smaller plane, which will take us all to bergen, Mike and the rest of there merryman soon followed ,and we were just about to take off when the pilot comes on and says he is having a problem....., and we will have to de-plane, and take another flight.....another flight??? Shit! here we go again, but then within 5 minutes he comes back on and says the very non- comforting phrase of, "WELL folks , everything SEEMS to be ok for our take off , sorry for the delay, so me and schmier sort of look around like... hmmm that does not sound like a confident statement now does it?, but before we could piss, and moan about it we were in the air, and on our way. We fortunately survive our flight, and and we have arrived at Bergen. A couple of vans are there to greet us all, including a writer named Bjorn, did not catch his last name , but he was a really cool guy, very knowledgable, and we chatted it up along with steve, tony choy and the boys on our way to the hotel. Bergen is one of the most expensive cities we have ever been to, its also very beautiful as well, and right off the bat we were charmed with the locals (dig deep for the cleverness) and the scenery, and the best part the weather, cause wherewe
come from it's a very hot time of year right now, but in bergen a chilling 70 degrees, very nice weather for metal. So as with each city, and the heat we have faced and of the lack of air conditioning in any of the other hotel room across the globe, i was not expecting to find one this time either. We all got our keys and the showered up, and headed out to check it out, get some food etc, so me and stece and tony choy meet up in the lobby, but before they arrived, i run in to this guy named....???  dark something or ther, shit sorry bro i cannot remember your name, anyways we head up to his room so i can sign his rare atheist vinyl. We chat for a bit and i remeber i have to meet those guys , and so i head out to the lobby and off we go in search of food. We quickly realise that in order to fucking eat in this country, you will need to apply for a fucking loan!!! We each had burgers, fries and a drik and it was literally almost 70 bucks! That is crazy! people must make a lot of money, cause eveything was like that, way higher than it should be, but the town seemed to thrive so , i guess they are used to it. We walk around and check out some the old buildings, and kind of mull around the town a bit killing time cause we will be going to see tonights festivals bands atthe garage, where Morbid Angel will be playing this really small place, i have not seen them i n a club this small since 1986, also necrophagist is playing, so we want to see them as well. Around 7 o clock we head over to the club and we meet the promoter who was very cool to us, we had some 9 dollar pints, and watch Obliteration, a local norwegian band we befriended later in the weekend, they were very young guys , who were very excited to play, we run into some guys who came all the way from australia to see us, they had previously also traveld 3 weeks ago to germany for our Wacken performance, we were just blown away that someone would travel that far just to see us play, thats priceless dedication! Steve flynn has made a hugeo discovery that was some of the best news thus far on the trip, he had located a 7-11 which is notoriously an american type convenience store and lo and behold they have my absolute fav drink on the planet MT. DEW!!! Now anyone who knows me, knows that i bleed this shit, so i made plans to return there after the show to gather some des for the stay....bliss! We get a little antsy and decide to wander around the town a bit, everything is within earshot of the clubs so we enjoyed checking at all out. While standing in front of our hotel , we run into a group of like 7 metal head dudes from all over the world, they are also fans of the band and we strike up a conversation that leads to another of my fav indulgences WEED! And they have some, so off we go to their hotel room, we all pile in and we start shooting the shit about our influences which comes up a lot while talking about the music of atheist, people often wonder...."What the fuck did you guys listen to when you were writing this crazy shit" As the sounds of maiden, priest and oddly enough the Doors permeates the air in the room, a delightful smell of weed finds its way to theair as well, this dude had travels on a plane with weed taped to his person, into a country that does not tolerstae drugs of any kind we are told, man i could never do that, i would be so paranoid about getting busted and going to jail in norway, but i SURE am glad he had the balls to do it, cause withing minutes, we were smoking out with our new friends, this one dude in particular was funny cause he was asking choy something about the band, but he felt the need to be VERY close to your face while talking, he was quickly directed to flynn by tony and the dude grabbed the back of steve's head and sort of pulls him in closer to tell him " there must be something in your sould that makes you play like that, steve, while flattered was ready to go a little quicker than me and tony, we manged to get the guys to roll us a joint w/o the tobacco shit that all europeans  put in there joints, as you know from before we dont like to mix tobacco and our weed, its botanically sacriligious hahahah.

After catching a great buzz we singed off from our new friends and headed over to catch  the Morbid angel and necrophagist  sets, we could not smoke cigs in the club so we were all standing around outside the club half the time , which led us to many atheist fans for some reason thinking it very odd that we would just be hanging outside the club with them, i knew why they were curious, cause almost no other bands EVER hang out with the kids that  were there, what the fuck is that about? we LOVE to meet all of the different kids, and hear about there stories of discovering our music, i think its interesting to hear about them being in school and playing it for friends, and being all excited about it, and the upcoming  show. it reminded me of me when i was so stoked to play metallica, and slayer, and mercyful fate for people who had never heard metal like that like back in 1984/85  You can never imaigne that you will ever be that lucky to create art that makes people want to share it with there friends, and atheist has always had a very obscure, mystique, that led people to think they would never see us cause we had broken up. We met several people out front who had been listening to us for as longs as 15 years and as little as the day before, and they told us great stories of how it made them listen to metal music differently, we just listened in humbled AWW! One dude was like  i am so sorry, but i feel like i am meeting mickey fucking mouse hahaha, i thought that was so funny. Another dude wanted to guess mine and tony choys weight???? so he fucking picked us up off the ground and guessed hahaha. We really enjoyed just talking about metal and where its been, where its going, we also shared with them our knowledge of CYNIC's reunion tour, they had confirmed to us that they were gonna do it, not sure when, but they qill likely see the surface of europe in early 2007. Ok so now it was time to head downstairs to check out Morbid ANgel. the place was small but very crowded, i prefer to see them in this setting, it was way more intense, we had just earlier saw Necrophagist fucking destroy, they were super fast, and technical, with blast beats, a very hard working drummer, very very cool stuff. Morbid hits the stage after them and fires off all of early classics, and the kids are diggin git, david sounds good, the band is loud and proud, and pete the feet sandoval is in fine form. We cath about 5 tunes then head back to get some rest at the hotel, tomorrow promises to be a doozy, we are so looking forward to it. It hit the 7-11 grab me 4 mt. dews and its off to my lil room i go for some shut eye. PART 1(part 2 on the way)

Atheist Tour Diary/ Wacken 2006 Aug 5th
Current mood: m drained

So off to Wacken we go,....the big one, the mother of all metal festivals, and we can't fucking wait to hit it for some good beer, great weed, and killer metal! We stop like a hundred fucking times on the way to germany which is a 7 hour ride , but it's gonna take us 10 of course. We were like a bunch of fucking  chicks who have to piss every 3rd exit hahaha, first we are looking for Absinth, and then we are looking for good food, only to end up a friggin Mcdonalds...which i hate! We were missing the denn'y and bob evans...good ole american all night eating spots, but we settled for miky d's and truck stop food. Tomas and Tomas are the 2 guys who put together the CZ republic show for us, and they are the fucking coolest guys to travel with, turns out tomas#2 is a fucking KILLER blast beat drummer, i mean to him it's an art form, he showed steve the "gravity blast" so look our everyone, flynn with a blast beat could be dangerous hahaha. tons of laughs, no absinth and 10 hours later we arrive at Wacken, as we are pulling in we see another band arriving, you might have heard of them FUCKING CELTIC FROST!!! sweet, i will be looking forward to hearing that old shit, we used to listen to that shit all the time with roger patterson, he and a group of our friends used to of course....smoke out and listen the the frost, ahhh growing up death metal.....those were the days.....tampa, florida from 88-91  some great times  ANYWAYS! We arrive to the hotel and guess what? NO AIR CONDITIONING...AGAIN! man i do not know how you guys can sleep in that heat, it was probably 85 degrees outside and so you would think in such a nice hotel there would be....oh well! Showered up and headed over to day 2 we do not play until tommorow so we are just going to hang out and have some drinks and see what kind of trouble we can get into. We arrive and get our passes etc, and as soon as we get in we meet up with our publicist yvonne who we were meeting for the first time, she is responsible for making sure atheist graces the pages of all your favorite metal magazines. She takes us over to meet the fellow from Metal Hammer who is doing a killer piece on classic death metal albums and he chose Piece of Time to be a part of that distinguished group, and we are very honored. We also meet up with the legendary Ula Gheret, who is single handidly responsible for anything you have loved from Century Media for the last 12 years, he is also a fantastic writer/reviewer and also someone we call friend, he wrote some liner notes that were just amazing for the re-issues, those of you who DID buy the records and not just burn them from your friends will know what liner notes i speak of, they were emotional for us. so the night progresses and flynn wants to rest, so he heads back to the hotel and me and choy, and baker and carson, all head out to hang some more, saw my old buddy David Vincent, we chatted for a bit about how starnge it is that we are all meeting up after all these years as "classic" bands, thats a strange thing to us both  i think, cause it seems like just yesterday, but time has really flown by, me and dave have had our differences in the press in the past, but time heals, and now we are just fucking warriors who made it through the hundreds and hundreds of death metal bands that didn't, it was good to share a beer over that!

Met the also legendary Jaap ( i hope i spelled it right) who is responsible for all the bands you know and love from Nuclear Blast, turns out he is a fan of our madness and we have some GREAT conversation along with tony choy about the cynic days, technical metal in general, scmier from destruction strolled through the conversation and told me that Wacken tommorow for our set would be huge for us, and we would meet up in Norway at the end of the month to fucking kill it back to back with Atheist and Destruction in a big ass club/fest called Hole in the Sky. i think i mentioned what destruction meant to the sound of cynic and atheist, so it was a true metal honor to have words like that from schmier, see ya next week motherfuckers!!! The night grows on and we stroll out to catch celtic Frost, and they opejn with procreation of the wicked FUCKING CLASSIC!! they played it a bit slower which made it even heavier, it was great. We stayed for about half the set and then went and got some chicken on a stick, searched for weed but came up empty.

So i get a text message from yvonne, and it says i have press starting at 10:30a.m. so much for sleeping,  and my voice is fucking ragged out, from talking, and screaming in Prag. While we are grateful that anyone wants to cover the band it still kind of sucks to awake before noon....know what i mean?? The night is over, and now its time to head back to the hotel with the thomas's we all crash out and get ready for the big day tommorow.

(DAY OF SHOW) I rise at the bright and early time of 8 oclock  yikes thats early, so i head down with Tony fucking Choy...or TFC as we like to call him, and the thomas's are there as well , they will thankfully shuttle me over first and then head back later and get the rest of the guys in time for 3  o clock which leave the guys about an hour and a half on stage to get shit together. My day was full, spoke with many great publications, thanks to them all for covering Atheist at Wacken. it was our first gig in germany since 1993 with the benny boys. Oh by the way did i fucking mention there ARE 60,000 FUCKING METAL HEADS AT THIS EVENT....HOLY SHIT! With so many great bands playing today, i hope we get a good turnout, it could go either way cause we are playing literally the exact same time as Soulfly, and...well I cant wait to see if the technical heads will prevail, and turn up in droves. My voice at this point after 5 hours of chatting with jounalists is a mess! i never really have had any probs with ym voice over the years and i certainly would be a prime candidate for it to happen, but singing is actually harder than screaming the atheist stuff, problem is we just wont know how it sounds till we get out there, where as in a club you can soundcheck to see if you like the way it sounds...tweek it out a bot, but for fests its just thrown to the wolves. We have been touring w/o a crew or tour manager, me and flynn have been handling the biz and  mechandise. I think we might have been the only band without a posse of helpers. Thankfully we have the 2 thomas's and the local crew guys to help us get set up. We also have no soundman and our music is in dire need of good sound and if this guy running it has never heard us, he just might think we are soloing all the time hahaha. 5:30 rols around and we go on at 6:45 ish. So we are ahnging out on the side of the stage and fortunately we are able to get a pretty good sound on stage and we had some time to sort out the monitors as well while we could see the true tech heads starting to gather in front of the stage, thats was a great sight, cause like i said we were not sure how well it would be, geramny can be tough on a technical band....or at least thats what we THOUGHT   were we wrong, we hit the stage and the crowd was going off!! This festival is amazing, i cant tell you how cool it is to be standing up there , playing these tunes after all of this time, and in fromt of tens of thousands!! I fucking KNOW  Roger was there in spirit. Major props to the kids in the front rows, you must have been very hot, u guys were killing it up front...thanks for that, also a huge shoutout to the kids with the ATHEIST  "PIECE OF POLAND" banner...VERY COOL!  We spent the next 6 hours just, rolling around with relief that we did it, we accomplished what we wanted to, and had probably the very best Atheist show ever! Chatted with many who carried so many kind words about our performance, we got the dvd of the show which will most certainly turn up on the Atheist DVD which will out in early 2007. Me and flynn at one point just looked at each other and laughed with bliss cause we were having SO MUCH FUN. Back in the day so many were so confused by our set, no one would say anything, we never felt the love that we have recieved on all of the euro gigs this summer.  We wanted to hang out to see Motorhead play the ace of spades, so we are sitting there back stage shooting the shit, and we smell WEED our publicist yvonne is dutch i think so she found where it was coming from, and it was these 3 guys who were in charge of setting up the stages. They were smoking out, so yvonne asked if we could join in, and before we knew it not only were we smoking, but these lads were kind enough to roll us a joint of pure weed , no fucking tobacco shit thrown in, (Whats with that shit anyways?) TFC gets the joint and me and flynn head off to find the promoters so we can get our dough and split. We have a fucking early early flight out of hamburg, so we are not sleeping again on this night, cause by the time we get to slaeep tonight, it will be time to get up, i never go to bed before 2. The show is over, we did it, we got it done, with a missing gtr player, the stages coming down, powere shortages etc etc, we layed out some cool ass metal at the 2006 wacken festival. Musical highlights for me were Smoking that pure joint with all of the guys in the band , while watching Lemmy sing the ace of spades, thats how our night ended, what a great cap! other highlites include meeting kids who came from Mexico, Taiwan, Iceland, ajnd romania just to see us play, that means so much to us. We have a friend that we met online through the website his name is Mattei, he is such a nice kid, he went to a lot of trouble to come and see us, many people did and we thank you all. Mattei bro...it was good to finally meet you, i hope your pictures came out, if they did send them so i can post them on the website, infact anyone who has there pic taken with any of us in the band, please send it to starrfactory@verizon.net and we will post them on the www.officialatheist.com website.

Well wacken is done, and we are off to the hotel to pack our shit and prepare for 24 solid hours of travel with connecting flights and all , just to get home.  Thanks to you all, we will never forget it, we will post new pics and video as well very soon from the wacken concert. Ok off to hamburge where we will begin our voyage back. We come back to play in norway, and greece for the last shows of this leg of euro reunion shows. We do plan on doing about 5-7 american shows, with the first confirmed show being the AUDITORY ASSAULT festival in Baltimore,MD on Nov 25th. There wont be many american shows , so tell your friends, and come on out and see us one last time, we promise to make it worth the ride. Ok NO SLEEP TILL NORWAY!!!!! See you all there

Atheist Tour Diary/ CZ republic Aug 3rd 2006
Current mood: m hungry

Ah yes, yet another installment of the Atheist tour diary, this trip takes us to the CZ Republic, Prag to be exact, and a club show. We all flew from our hometowns this time around rather than meeting up in Atlanta like we did before, so of course my flight has to be a full 5 hours later than everyone elses, so they had been chilling at the hotel for a while was i was trying to get there. So i finally arrive to the airport in Prag and proceed to a flawless baggage recovery , which is already shit loadsbetter than the last voyage where everything was missing. I am picked up by Tomas, he is a very friendly guy who gives me the sort of tourist factoids  we are heading to the hoteltomeet up with the boys. He was telling me about the influence of the Elements record in that towns metal scene, some place prefer old school like Piece of Time, and other places prefer the more jazzy shit on elements. We are just glad there is something for everyone inside of just one Atheist tune hahaha. hit the hotel and meet up with the boys and we head on down to meet the promoter whose name is Thomas!! Had a couple beers and had a shower, and we headed on down to the train station to catch a train into town to have some dinner, we meet up with a great bunch of technical metal dudes(friend with the promoter), i cannot remeber the name of the restaurant, but it was really good, we shot the shit shit over many beers and some salmon. Money goes a long way it seems in Prag....beers were cheap, there was like  11 of us i think, and the bill for food, and ...maybe 6 rounds of beers was only 150 bucks!! Swweeet

One of the boys has some weed, so he rolls one up right at the fucking tabel we are eating at, shame they roll all there joints with tobacco, but it was still nice to smoke out in Prag, i like to get high in as many countries as i can. So we are literally right in front of this eating establishment, about 8 of us,including our fucking waiter, how funny is that! The day ends with thoughts of a fun ass time tomorrow on show day. 8/3/2006

Rise and shine to another day in the land of no Air Conditioning, good thing i snagged a fan from the front desk cause it would have been roasting in that room, the hotels in europe are oh so different than the U.S. this room was clean, but very small with 3 single beds in it, one little window, and NO T.V.???? What?? man there was nothing to do in that room...except sleep,  So showday is here and me and baker head over to the breakfast area at the hotel to have some food, a van will be picking us up at around 3 to head over to do soundcheck etc. Me sonny, and Baker decided to walk around town a bit, but there was not muchg to see but a lot of really old buildings, we could have caught the subway , but we were afraid we would get lost or something, the language is very hard to understand. So the van arrives and we head over to the club, upon arrival an older guy comes in the club and asks us to come out and meet his sons, they had just driven for Budapest, Hungary to see the show, so we went out of course and met the boys and we thanked them for coming such a distance to see us. Soundcheck was great, so much better than fest, where they just kind of throw you out there and you do not have time to make sure you can hear everything, cause in the music of Atheist, if you cannot hear you will be Lost, and if you get lost your fucked hahah .....anyways we get  a great sound , and head over for some dinner and some waiting, we are here till the end of the night, then we can go back and shower and prepare for a 10 hour ride to germany forn Wacken on Sat. As we are eating dinner we see a bunch of metal heads starting to lurk around the area, and by the time we got back to the club, there was a good crowd, we were the only band of the night and it felt good that the club would be full tonight and...well thats a good feeling after all of these years. The show starts, and we are cooking through U.P...... and suddely......*poof* the power goes out.......of course the atheist curse strikes again .....we have a shit load of rowdy metal loving people in front us and we have no power...they qickly get it together and the set goes fucking OFF!!! It was a journey in close quarters that i just love, i do not like to be 100 yards away from the front row you know?? i like the intimate shit much better. We get to the end of the set and mind you we only have so many tunes to play cause it was hard enough to pull that off with the distances we live apart, so we hit the litle OOmpa LOOmpa dressing room and kids are shouting for another song..??? what do we do, i say..well lets just go back out and say thanks one more time...take a bow...something..so we do and then we head off, and the crowd gets louder, and louder so we have no choice but to play a song twice hahaha so AIR was the choice and thats the way it ended, a very amazing gig, and a great promoter and very cool people, good food, weed, i highly endorse.

Party for a bit after the show, met lots of really cool people who were very knowledgable of the history of our band, and the music and the complexities of it all. We really felt welcome with our wierd ass metal, strange it took 13 years for that to happen....but hey better late than never right? Ok sleep and then travel all fucking day to Wacken night night all!

Kelly  p.s. i KNOW there are typos everyone, while logging in this blog if you make a mistake its hard to go back and correct without messing up, so bear with the missing letters here and there

Atheist tour diary /ITALY July 16th
Current mood: m thankful

So we rise and shine quite early the morning after thebUk gig for our flights to Italy, we make it to birmingham airport in plenty of time and we board a plane which will take us first to germany then to italy, so we make it to germany, and board our plane to italy, i have seen more airplanes in  4 days them most see is years, but its better than driving thats for sure, i hate long trips in a vehicle unless its great scenery which i am sure italy will be. So we get on this plane and its only about 1 hour to italy from germany, i start dozing right away cause i got no sleep from the lack of a/c in the hotel room. Suddenly right at tony choys feet this young italian girl starts having a diabetic seizure, i mean like right at tonys feet on the plane, right away a doctor stands up and offers to help the girl, its a good thing, cause she would have had a tough time w/o his assistance, he held her calm until they could land in italy, so the pilot's approach into italy was crazy , i mean fucking set that plane down quick and taxied at about 90 mph it seemd to get to the waiting paramedics, they came on the plane and took her away in an ambulance, what a trip, so we get to baggage with fear in our hearts and we wait.....and wait for our luggage finally the suitcases start coming off, then we see a guitar case coming off, then another , soon we had all of our things except...... FUCK! THEY LOST STEVE'S TIMBALES AND CYMBALS Can you believe this shit, so we head through security to try to find the driver that is picking us up, and there is the poor sap standing there holding a paper sign that says ATHEIST They authorities must have thought he was insane, we knew someone would be waiting so we were considering coming off the plane with signs that read " Christian" and "Baptist", and catholic, that would have been hilarious. We made our way through the dogs, (good thing we did not bring that killer bud we had in the uk to Italy...whew!! So steve fills out more paper work and off we go in hopes that by tommorow they will arrive at our hotel.
We start our trk up the mountains of italy in search of Brescia, and WOW it was very beautiful!!! We dont see many mountains like these where we are from in the southern united states, it was really amazing. So we arrive at the hotel golfo in this tiny little tourist villiage, the hotel looks great, right off the bat i realise holy shit this place is gonna be w/o air conditioning as well i could tell by the heat, and folks in italy this time of year , its fucking HOT!!

We get these great skeleton keys for our rooms, i picked a great room with a huge balcony and a great great view, but its about 90 degrees F in this room, i knew that sleep was not gonna happen, we showered up and headed out for some great italine cuisine. Right awat this frenh guy names Greg i think spots us in the streets, now we are a long way from home so we do not expect anyone to recognize us here you know? But he was great, me the moron i think he is fucking italian so i start asking him to read these menus in search of Carpaccio, its one of my favorite foods, but he reminds me that he is not italian, but french so i was like OHHH sorry, and just sat down ang i was fortunate that the waitress spoke a bit of english so i found my place for carpaccio, we had beers, and we tried to call our friend from myspace Dema, and see what was to do in italy on a sat night, but she did not show up until later in the evening with some friends, so we had more beers, and just kind of soaked up the scenery and looked around a bit. i called my girl and said you would not believe where i am standing and how gorgeous it is. We try to sleep but nothing doing i rolled around for a few hours and we woke up day of show hot and miserable, but stoked to play, still no word from the airport with steves stuff. We dont play till around 6 p.m. so we still have a bit of time. So the driver is to pick us up at 2:30, we start heading to the gig but it seems that steve is on his way to the airport to try to retrieve his drum stuff, but we did not know he was leaving really or at least i did not know. We get to the gig and the stage is sweet, the crown is large, and the sound is good, we are met by the stage mgr and  promoters, we see some kids waiting by the fence to sign some shit for them so we run over and meet our first set of italian metal heads, they are very very enthusiastic, its a shame that the U.S. fans are not so loyal and rabid. $ oclock and still no steve, the rest of guys are in the dressing room warming up, i talked with steve, hewas supposed to be back by now but it seems that the driver got really lost and on top of a 1 hour ride one way to and from the airport, he was cutting it close, so of course i am in  starting to trip a bit, he arrives with only about 30 minutes to spare, finally i can relax knowing everyone is there, now i am thinking :Ok its time to jam, nothing can stop it now right? wrong!!!!!!!! We get 3 tunes into our set and everything is going great, the crowd is on fire we are having so much fun and the CRASh!!!1 The stage collapses underneath Tony Choy, and he falls really hard, and destroys his bass and sprained his wrist, he is super luck that he has not broken his leg or his face check out the video of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY-SCIoINyQ so he gets pulled from beneath the stage and i am looking down at him like "What the fuck just happened dude, and the crowd was standing there stunned and then when tony yelled for me to get him another bass, the kids were chanting ahhh- theeee-ist  aaa-theee-iiist, and then To-ny Choy over and over it was a great moment, tony gets the bass form one of the other bands , and we are ripping through Mother Man and it was an electric moment, truly something i will never forget, thanks so much to the italian fans for that! We finish our set and it went really great, much better than the uk gig with the guitar debacle, steve managed to make it back in time with his drumes and i am thinking ok we are done, nothing elese can go wrong, i come off stage and i go to get a cig, and as i walk back towards the stage  i see these paramedics and this dude being carried of the stage on a stretcher, and soo i realise WAIT A MINUTE!!!......Thats our guitar players feet, it seems that while packing his shit up from the show he cracked his head on the huge iron eagle backdrop that Saxon had set up on the back side of the stage, so i am following the medics to the littel medical tent, i see blood pouring from chris's head, and as we enter the tent i see them bandaging tonyc arm up so picture me standing there going, holy shit half my band is injured here in this tent, a truly metal moment people, blood injury and metal, you gotta love it. Everyone recorded though and we proceeded to have a great great time drinking a chatting with italian metal lovers, people actually came from mexico to see us as well as canada, we were blown away by that, thats a long trip to take to see a band play. Our meet and greet went really  really well we saw lots of the new atheist shirts out there , and i must say the italians are amazing people, total metal lovers and very open minded about our musuc, many discovering us for the first time, these records are almost older than they are.Another highlite was hearing that Destruction who we have been fans of for year shouted out on stage that they were sticking around another day to see atheist play, you have to understand what that meant to us, when we finally met scmier and mike, they were super cool , and turns out they were fans of our music....wow that was cool cause would listen to there record endlessly. So we will be playing with them in norway again and we have plans to smoke out and drink up with them at the hole in the sky festival in late august, that  promises to be a good  one. We mulled around till midnight m,eeting everyone, hanging out with some of the great bands on the bill, a good time was had by all......think were are trouble free???? oh no it could not possibly end there now could it? we have to leave at 4:30 in the morning to start our voyage back to the states, i cant sleep when we get back to hte hotel cause its just to damn hot.. so i head down and chatted with my friends andreea and Sandi, they went to great lengths to come see us play all the way from Romania... they were super cool people and they work for a company called Metalhead(how appropriate right), we chatted about  an hor and then we said goodbye and off to try to to sleep i go. we rise and shine and its still dark i am so tired as we head down the mountain to fly home. i wont go through the details of trying to get home, but people 39 hours, 1 dead bird in an airplane motor, and 3 missed flights and a couple of multiple hour delays (Ever see Planes, Trains,And Automobiles) later, an d we finally make it back home, it was the worst traveling experience i have EVER had, but the shows were SO WORTH IT! We are now home for 11 days and then its back to europe for the big one!@!! WACKEN which will be the biggest crown atheist has ever played for 30-50 thousand!!!!

Needless to say we cannot wait, not looking forward to the travel part of it (but the shows will be priceless), and rest assured i will not be checking

baggage, i will travel light trust!!

Well thats all, for the first leg of the reunion tour, i cannot imagine what will happen next, stay tuned to this blog, subscribe tell a friend, see you ate Wacken!!!!!!!!!!!! Atheist forever  Cheers Kelly

Atheist Tour Diary/ UK
Current mood: m accomplished

Atheist Tour journal 7-11-7-18

Well we are off to the worst travel day ever, we were scheduled to leave for the UK at 2:05 p.m. today from atlanta, but due to bad weather in NJ which is where we are now connecting to our flight to birmingham we were not able to leave there till 7 p.m. Fucking Hell!

So we needed to get to jersey in time to catch a new flight to paris which is where we had to go in order to make it to birmingham. So we get in the air finally and you would think we were safe from delayes but the pilot comes on and says we have to slow our approach cause of the weather again, long story short we get in at 9:45 and missed that fucking flight to paris/

Now we are screwed cause they were saying we could not get another flight out till the next morning so with an hour of haggling with these people we managed to get a flight to Manchester, england at 11:14 p.m. which with MORE delays turned into 1:00 a.m. At this point our luggage will not arrive till friday morning in birmingham, so we all have no clothing, we are frustrated beyond belief and the fucking tour has not even started yet and on top of that this plane SUCKS! Very small compared to the kind of plane you generally take to europe, i hope the shows go better than the travel has thus far. Pilot says we have great tailwinds so we should make the voyage in 6 hours 17 minutes, there is some shit ass music playing on the plane and my voice is still ragged from the rehearsals yesterday where i blew it out pretty good. Hopefully it will heal up in time for the show friday. My sleeping pills are starting to kick in so its time to crash the fuck out.

So here we are we finally made it to the hotel but our bags and guitar have not, so we went to a local brit pub for some fish and chips, the pub owner actually came and picked us all up to take us to the pub, we enjoyed the food and some guiness of course, it was the first bit of relaxation we have had in 2 days so it was nice. We sat around and shit the shit about old times, and then had the pub guy take us back to the hotel, i called my girl jessica and told her we had made it safely, and then got some sleep at around 10:30 its the earliest i have been to bed in years.

Couldn't sleep very well cause there was no a/c in the hotel and it was hot as fuck!, I am used to sleeping with the chillin a/c but that was not to be here in the Uk, we had the windows open and all you could hear was cars and trucks driving by so sleep was shit. Got up the day of the gig 7/14 and got some euro b-fast at around 7 a.m. earliest i have been awake in years as well, we headed back to birmingham airport to try to retrieve our luggage and guitars, our driver was a very colurful cool ass brit, we arrive at the airport and while we are trying to retrieve our luggage which had not yet arrived a fucking alarm goes off and it was a bomb scare! Geez can we get a break here please? so they cleared the airport and we had to head back to the hotle empty handed in hopes that a courrier service would bring our stuff to the hotel in time for the gig.

After a 2 hour nap a courrier did arrive with our bags, but not the guitars so the tension was building cause these guys really needed to be as comfortable as possible, but this would not be the case, on the way over to the gig in the van we were clearly worried about what the rental guitars might be, when we arrived the guys got the guitars and started warming up with them, it was a bit colder than we are accustomed to, we are used to the southern US heat, it was quite nice actually, but then again i dont have to play guitar in the cold :))

The benediction guys, our good friends we toured with last in 1993 arrived with some amazing weed, and there best wishes, i cant tell you how great it was to see them again. Frank , Daz and Fat Bloke you guys rule! Ok so now its showtime and head out for the first time in 13 years and the kids were very enthusiastic, shouting song titles and showing tons of support. it seemds that we were the only death metal band of the day, most of the it was Power Metal, so there was a good intensity for our set, we pulled through the set and finally we had broken the cherry on this fucker. Our friend and webmaster Micah was there and he took a ton of great pictures for us and they all came out great!! Some are posted now on the officialatheist.com website. Kids came from all over the world for this show, mexico, russia, ireland, canada, we were blown away that someone would come that far to see us play, we hung out and signed shirts and discs as long as they would let us and met a lot of totally cool people, we thank you all for that love! Many times through the night me and steve looked at each other like can you fucking believe we are back here, i never thought i would see a stage with my boy flynn ever again, it was amazing. We went back to our hotel, and chatted till the wee hours with some irish lads, and had some wicked Indian food delivered to the hotel, chowed and then hit to get ready for an early flight to Italy. Who knows what madness will ensue there? Stay tuned for the italian diaries! Cheers Kelly

Atlanta rehearsals day 3
Current mood: m busy

Sup everyone.??

Kelly kicking it here in Atlanta, Georgia rehearsing  with the atheist boys. We are staying here at "Casa de Flynn" aka Steve Flynn's house. Its a great hang and we have had a really good time so far this weekend. The tunes are sounding better, and better, so we are about ready to get this shit on the highway here in a few weeks. It has been really tough pulling together details of these tunes, i mean we were working on"Mineral" and of course not only are the guitar players new, but steve flynn did not play on that record so he also has to learn it all, and we have marveled at looking into playing the clever shit in that tune, and literally have been working on it all weekend.  it has so many littel things that you  hear but do not realise how it is played, so its a bit  decieving, plus it's got a lot more groove in it than the average metal tune, and groove has to be....well you gotta "have it" and if you dont then it falls outta line, but we got it rolling sweet now. i had commented to those guys how amazing it was that we wrote that tune in 1 fucking day, the day before rolling tape the next day for what would become "immortal" versions of the tunes. We were in some crazy ass zone at that point in 1993.  Steve and Tony are working out some cool shit to bust out on you technical metal loving muh fuckers, that is sure to blow minds. Its the first time these guys have been unleashed in europe together, and i truthfully will be standing on stage as a fan like anyone else watching them crush through tunes like an incarnations dream, mother man etc. i cannot fucking wait! Ok steve is brewing up some burgers on the grill and then its off to practice. thanks for listening cheers - kelly

The home stretch
Current mood: m accomplished

Greetings all, i need to start blogging a bit more , i see that many are stopping by to see what is going on with Atheist, and i gotta tell ya it's fucking kickin right now for us. people are buying the records and we are making tons of new fans daily. better late than never i guess right?

So we will be busting our asses on 4 tunes this weekend, 4 that we need to have down in a 3 day period cause we will not have a shot at any more rehearsals until we hit the stage at Bloodstock in the UK on july 14th.

Nothing like a challenge to sharpen your motivation, this will be a very challenging situation, me and flynn and choy are ready to roll with everything, flynn is interestingly enough facing a challenge of his own in learning the "Elements" material, his challenge is stylistic, and i for one as a fan of flynn's will be just as interested to see how well he pulls it off as anyone! He is so montrous right now you guys, i mean as a player he has never been better. I am representing his new band Gnostic" with my label/production company Starrfactory Records. They just completed a new batch of tunes for the new demo that we will be shopping to the labels this fall, and people the demo is SMOKIN! THE drumming is fucking just.....unrivaled! you see where other metal drummers may have speed, and endurance , flynn has speed, endurance and the ability to play between the lines so to speak. In other words he has finesse, and COMPLETE limb independence.

He can pull off entirely differently timed patterns with his ride, and high hat, and at the same time have a sick double bass "press" going on, its just fucking otherworldly! So this whole trip this summer has been great for all of us, it has brought us back to some music that we really missed, it has brought steve back to playing again, and it has brought us back in touch with a lot of old friends that we have spoken with in many years. So THANKS to you all for making this happen. see you in europe!  U.S. show dates coming soon....... Bet on it!   cheers, chiao, and laters to you all. Stay tuned!
